For: Independent Tutor (The Teaching Patch)

Date Issued: 1st of September 2025 Reviewed: Annually

1. General principles

The Teaching Patch acknowledges it has a responsibility for the safety of children receiving our services. It also recognises that good safeguarding policies and procedures are of benefit to everyone involved with our work, including staff, as they can help protect them from erroneous or malicious allegations.

2. Policy Statement

As an independent tutor, I am committed to promoting the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people I work with. I recognise my responsibility to protect them from harm and ensure a respectful, inclusive, and safe learning environment. This policy outlines the steps I take to uphold safeguarding principles and meet my duty of care.

3. Roles and Responsibilities

· I serve as my own Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for all safeguarding matters.

· I take responsibility for:

o Understanding safeguarding procedures and guidance.

o Responding appropriately to concerns.

o Maintaining accurate, confidential safeguarding records.

o Reporting concerns to appropriate authorities when necessary.

4. Code of Conduct

Tutoring sessions always maintain professionalism and boundaries. I agree to:

· Treat all children with dignity and respect.

· Avoid physical contact unless essential and appropriate.

· Communicate professionally, avoiding inappropriate language or humour.

· Use secure and appropriate platforms for online sessions.

· Never exchange personal contact details with students.

· Ensure a parent/guardian is aware of session times and content.

5. Recognising and Responding to Abuse

I understand the four primary categories of abuse:

· Physical Abuse – causing physical harm.

· Emotional Abuse – persistent emotional maltreatment.

· Sexual Abuse – involving a child in sexual activities.

· Neglect – failing to meet a child’s basic needs.

If a student discloses abuse or I suspect harm:

· I will listen calmly and avoid judgment.

· I will not promise confidentiality if a child's safety is at risk.

· I will document the concern clearly and objectively.

· I will report to the appropriate safeguarding authority immediately.

6. Reporting Procedures

· In emergency situations: Call 999.

· Non-emergency safeguarding concerns: Contact the local authority’s children’s services.

· I may also consult the NSPCC Helpline: 0808 800 5000.

I will record:

· The nature of the concern.

· Details of the disclosure (in the child's own words).

· Date, time, and my response.

· Any decisions made and who was contacted.

7. Training and Vetting

To uphold best practice:

· I hold an Enhanced DBS Certificate.

· I have completed safeguarding and Prevent training.

· I regularly review updates to Keeping Children Safe in Education and other official guidance.
